Food Waste Friday – Radar Fail

Every Friday, Kristen over at The Frugal Girl posts a picture of her food waste. She invites other bloggers to join in her effort to save money and reduce the amount of food that gets thrown away in our country every day.

Well, we had a failure this week.  Remember the jar of alfredo sauce that was on the radar last week?  Yeah, well…

… here it is.  It’s a little under halfway full.  It smelled fine when I checked it last week, but by the time we opened it to use it it was pretty funky.  I’m guessing it was the act of opening it to check that did it in.  To be fair, it was pretty old when I tested it.  We’ve resolved not to buy this stuff anymore, so this is the last time I waste store bought sauce!!!

One funky jar? Not to shabby. Well done.

Hi Jessie! Visiting from The Frugal Girl Food Waste Friday! Question — was it that particular sauce you didn’t like or are you just not into store bought sauces anymore? I ask because we are *finally* getting a Trader Joe’s in the KC Metro area this month and I’m trying to guage from others what is good and what isn’t so I don’t waste money on items there.

    Happy Friday!

LeAnn, the sauce is perfectly good – the real problem is that we don’t do pasta that much anymore. Cooks Illustrated has a pretty easy recipe for Alfredo sauce, so I think we’re going to try to make that from now on, just as much as we need for the meal. Congratulations on the TJ’s – it’s an awesome store! Lots of good products, and unbeatable wine prices if you drink alcohol.

    • Jessie says:

Oh, and my husband apparently can’t comment himself, but he wanted me to point out that NO store bought alfredo sauce is very good, and it’s true. Homemade will always be way better.

      • LeeAnn says:

Your husband is exactly right. Almost everything homemade is better than jarred. 🙂 I’m very excited about the wine prices (isn’t it Three Buck Chuck that they carry?). I stay home with my three young kids — wine is a necessity, ha ha!

  4. Have you ever heard of Wildtree? Their prepackaged stuff is amazing! Healthy, no yucky stuff and not that expensive, either. I recently went to a home part of theirs and bought the alfredo…yummy stuff for when you are in a pinch and can’t crank out the from-scratch ingredients yourself! 🙂

One jar isn’t too bad at all! At least you recognized that it was borderline last week and tried to use it up this week. I think that should count for something!

How about getting a dog to eat up all the waste?

    • Jessie says:

Unfortunately human food is too rich and not very good for dogs. Also our dog lives inside and I would hate for him to have accidents!
